February 5, 2001, 23:07 hours, structure fire, 923 22nd Street, "C" Platoon assignment:
Engine 4, Engine 3, Engine 1, Truck 1, Rescue 1, Paramedic Squad 1, and Battalion 1; twenty
fire fighters.
About three blocks from the reported address, Engine 4 saw smoke laying at about roof
level. Engine 3 laid a supply line from a hydrant, and proceeded to the front of the house.
Upon arrival, the garage was seen to be well involved, with the door closed and locked.
Before firefighters could cut the lock with bolt cutters, they were given the keys by the
house owner.
Once the hose lines were in-place, with Firefighter Ayala ready to apply water to the
fire, Firefighter Taylor opened the garage door. Upon opening the door, and letting fresh
air in, a ball of fire came out of the garage, surrounding firefighters Taylor and Ayala.
The fire, contained to the garage, was knocked down within a couple of minutes. Containment
to the garage was due, in part, to a fire wall which was recently replaced during house
remodeling.
Arson investigator Alan Major determined the cause of the fire to be linseed oil soaked
rags that were used to stain the rear wood deck. The rags had been placed in a plastic
bucket in the garage about five hours earlier that evening.
