Emergency Services Office: (310) 458-8686

SUPPLIES: Adequate canned goods; manual can-opener; bottled water; battery-operated radio, flashlights; batteries; rain gear; blankets; first aid kit; spare prescription medications; indoor activities for children; similar items for car. Have extra cash in small denominations. Have a travel bag of essentials ready to go. CONTACTS: Establish local and out-of-state telephone contacts who will act as information centers if you and your loved ones call in due to telephone problems.

WINTERIZING HOME AND BUSINESS: Make any roof repairs before wet season. Clear debris from rain gutters and scuppers. Businesses and apartment buildings with subterranean parking should check the operations of their sump pumps. Contact the Gas Company for information on relighting pilot lights or with questions about gas appliances. Store sheet plastic if you anticipate leaks.

GAS AND ELECTRICITY: Make sure your heating system is in top working order. Have your chimney inspected and cleaned if necessary. Do not use ovens to heat the house. Use only approved portable heaters with caution. Prepare for electrical outages with battery-operated flashlights. Back to the top.

WATER PROBLEMS: Local flooding may overwhelm sewer systems. Residents should be careful about wading or driving in flooded areas. Residents will be advised by local media if water contamination is a problem. SANDBAGS: Santa Monica residents and businesses may obtain sand bags at all Santa Monica Fire Department Stations. Sand is available at Memorial Park, 14th and Olympic in the parking lot. There is a 10 bag limit. Once you have the bags, proper placement is important.

EMERGENCY AND PLANNING INFORMATION: For assistance, call the Santa Monica Fire Department at 458-8668 and the American Red Cross Santa Monica Chapter at 394-3773. Emergency broadcast information will be available on local radio station KFWB, 980 AM and CityTV (channel 16 -- available in Santa Monica only). Do not call 9-1-1 for information. For emergencies such as flooding, roof collapse, fires, gas leaks and serious medical problems, or other life threatening situations call 9-1-1.
